Al Wahda Hospital E Block
2025, Derna, Libya

The hospital in the city of Derna, Libya, was severely damaged and rendered unusable as a result of an air strike during the Libyan Civil War. In 2023, Hurricane Daniel caused tens of thousands of casualties in the city of Derna, leaving it facing a major health crisis.
The humanitarian crisis city was facing, led to the international community to step up and work toward reopening the damaged Wahda hospital.

A collaborative interior intervention within Al-Wahda Hospital
Studio Pines was invited as a collaborator in the rehabilitation of Al-Wahda Hospital. The design team was commissioned to re-design the interior of existing Mother and Child Block.

Inspiration Board
Inspired by the dunes of Libyan Desert and its contrasting colors of the Mediterranean coast.
The selected color palette aims to provide a space of serenity and comfort, while the overall design aims to create a future‑ready, family‑centered facility that transforms almost forty‑year‑old building into highly functional healthcare facility.

The facility brings together all key maternal care functions across two floors.
Consisting of two floors, with patients’ rooms, doctor offices, operation / labor rooms and waiting areas, the hospital is a place of happy beginnings for many families.

The waiting areas designed as lounges that could provide comfortable waiting time with enough capacity to host the patients’ large families. Every single element in the common areas, from wall bumpers to wayfinding are designed meticulously in accordance with the design’s general atmosphere.

Overall the project balances high clinical standards with an atmosphere of wonder and comfort for patients and their companions.
